The tiny crowd watching the arrival and departure of the President during the visit of President Ronald Reagan to China in April 1984. I was working for TIME. The TIME Team had three hours to make their pictures and get them to a courier to take them back to the USA for a color deadline. We all expected great crowds, (my job was to make the outside crowd picture), but Tiananmen Square was completely empty. I walked around the Great Hall to where the presidential motorcade was to load and there was just a handfull of people--but that was just enough to make this photograph. It ran as the lede picture of TIME over two pages at the top of the article.
