Black Hawk and camels.JPG
New models of fighting machines arriving in Saudi Arabia were big stories In the build up of our forces for Gulf War One. The latest model Apache helicopter had arrived at a base North of Darahan. I went to the base to photograph this new arrival. Usually you visit with the ranking officer to get his permission and this commanding officer was very happy as the possibility a story in TIME MAGAZINE. As we were talking AI mentioned that the day before I had the good fortune of photographing the recently arrived MiAi tank and a herd of camels. He replied, sheet that’s nothing and yelled to his aid, “Get my Black Hawk ready” We went for a ride until he found a herd of camels, then asked me , “You aren’t afraid of being alone in the desert I promise I’ll come back and pick you up” He landed the Black Hawk and left me in this sea of sand. It seemed like a very long time, I was beginning to worry. I heard the helicopter coming behind the sand dune ridge and the camels appeared. The Black Hawk was just a few feet above them herding them. Those camels were running a way behind was, I assume the angry owner of the camels shaking his fist at the helicopter. It made for an interesting picture and it did run in TIME.
