  • Sailors on board the USS Monterey, a submarine. Taken on a story of TIME magazine on the use of submarines at that time. note: the Navy was very interested in keeping their budget for submarines so they did a pr campaign inviting reporters from the networks and news magazines to ride along --this was one of those efforts. ..Photograph by Dennis Brack bb 27

  • Candidate Ronald Reagan posing in front of the President Ford campaign poster in March 1976. Actually I made both images in this photograph. I was commissioned to do the prints ads and brochures for President Ford--David Hume Kennerly thought that they should not use official White House pictures for the election ads (times change) so they hired me. The President Ford poster was one of the major symbols of the Ford campaign. A few days before the New Hampshire primary I convinced Mike Deaver and Lyn Nofzinger to have Reagan pose in front of this poster as a cover for TIME if he won the New Hampshire primary...I knew that the famous photographer, Richard Avedon, had photographed Reagan the day before. Avedon was doing a series of portraits of the presidential candidates for ROLLING STONE using the 8x10 format. His style was to stand the subject on a seamless background and just wait and then take what Avedon called the most truthful image of the candidate--others called it the ugliest portrait...While I was photographing Reagan, I said "Boy, yesterday you had a very famous photographer taking your portrait" Reagan replied, "Oh, that fellow, he wasn't a very good photographer". Reagan was used to Hollywood, news, and fashion photographers who would take a picture and Reagan would react for the next pose--Avedon just stood there, did not say anything, and didn't take a picture. Reagan could not understand this. Sure enough, the photograph by Avedon in the ROLLING STONE article was not flattering...Oh, Reagan lost the New Hampshire primary to President Ford and this image was never the cover of TIME...Photograph by Dennis Brack bb 27

  • Boy did I need this photograph. I was part of the four photographer team on President Reagan trip to China and my assignment was to caption that crowd react. An easy thing you would think, but when we got to Tiananmen Square it was completely empty--the Chinses had decided to make this a low key reception and ordered, no crowds. President Reagan went in to meet the Chinese leaders and I frantically searched for people. The motorcade was pulled around back and just a few people began to form. By the time Reagan got to the car a crowd of maybe fifty people was there to strain an barely see the motorcade. A tight crop with a 300mm lens and a prayer made this picture. I rushed to meet the other photographers on the TIME team and handed the courier my on roll of film. The editors of TIME must have been pleased becasue this photograph ran a page and 2/3rds as the lede picture...Photograph by Dennis Brack bb 27

  • Malcomb Forbes and his yacht. Photograp made for TIME. The yacht was parked where it would be backlit and would not make a photograph of Forbes and his new yacht. I knew that the PR type would say--that's the best you can do and bring Forbes out for a worthless photograph. Of course the sun was perfect from the water side, so I went down the pier and hired a small motorboat and came up on the water side of the yacht. Forbes was alone an saw me- I introduced myself as the TIME photographer who he was waiting for. I explained about the lighting and he agreed . I asked Forbes if he would like to step aboard my yacht for the picture and he did. No one knew what was going on but soon they looked for Forbes and saw him out on the water in my boat. They were furious but there was nothing that they could do. When we were finished I took Forbes back and he said that now that he had toured my yacht how about a tour of his. My assistant and I spent about a half hour on the yacht as the PR type glared at me. ..Photograph by Dennis Brack bb 27
